A window sash can not only add a bit of glamour to your home, it also adds to the comfort of your family by keeping drafts out. This is why window sash repair is important because you need to keep your window sash in good condition to keep it looking good as well as gain maximum comfort for your home. If the window sash is not maintained in a good working condition, there is so much at stake for your home such as moisture seeping in and causing so much decay in the structure of wooden window frames.
There some simple steps that you can follow if you need to do some window sash repair at home:
1. Pry off the moldings or unscrew the stops at the front lower part of the sash.
2. Take off the chains or cords after you have pulled out the lower sash.
3. Avoid getting the cord tangled into weight pockets by knotting them securely.
4. Remove the upper sash by separating it from its parting beads or the vertical strips that hold it together in its place.
5. Take off the upper sash’s cords and chains.
6. Remove the glass and label it properly so you would know which way to put it back in.
7. Clean the sash joints using a Dremel, or any other rotary tool, to grind the rotten wood away.
8. Apply epoxy for rebuilding the joints that you have just cleaned. The first brush of epoxy would need about 20 minutes to dry off. After that, add in the second layer and leave it to dry overnight. It would be best if you wrap it in plexiglass while drying off so that, once the plexiglass wrapping is taken off, you are saved from more sanding because the surface will already be smooth.
9. Sand the sash off and then use an oil-based primer to seal it. Make sure that the epoxy is fully cured before doing this.
10. Roll a rope of glazing compound into the grooves of the sash’s exterior side.
11. Insert the glazier points on each side of the window frame.
12. Seal the pane’s edges with another rope of glazing compound. You will need to wait a week before you can coat it with an oil-based primer.
13. Replace or add weather-stripping to the windows. And then reattach all the cords and chains back to exactly the way it was in steps 1 to 4.
Window sash repair is easy enough, especially if you have already taken accurate measurements prior to ordering your replacement kit. Also, note that it is important that you add in a coat of primer when needed because this will prevent the oil in the putty from getting all sucked-out by the wood, thereby preventing premature brittleness on your wooden frame.
